Linux Mint Debian Edition (xfce)

I’ve now installed Linux Mint Debian Edition on my Aspire One and I have to say I’m pretty happy. No indicators but I can live with that as long as everything works and it does. Moreover, it is a rolling release so that in principle, I never have to install another OS. I downloaded LMDE… [Read more…]

Oneiric

I’m extremely disappointed with Oneiric Ocelot (the worst Canonical have put out since, and maybe even worse than, Krappy Koala). The sound indicator is now broken (the scroll wheel no longer works to change the volume) and something is very broken about the 64 bit version (ia32-libs is only installable with a fresh install and… [Read more…]

Natty again

Almost by accident, I tried Xubuntu for the first time in years when I installed it on an old, old Micron for my mom’s use while she’s visiting. I was pleasantly surprised by the absence of Open Office and Evolution and the presence of Ubuntu Indicators (what the heck were Gnome developers thinking)! It looked… [Read more…]

I currently have Madbox installed (which is based on Maverick) and  have no plans to upgrade unless Ad-Comp releases a Natty based Madbox. Unfortunately Ad-Comp’s website seems to be down and there is no indication as to if and when he will release a Natty based Madbox.

Maverick HOWTO

I’ve installed the beta release of Maverick and I have to say that I am quite impressed. There is one niggling problem with the keyring for which I have not found a satisfactory answer but there is a simple workaround if anyone else has this problem. As with Lucid, I opted for Lubuntu but much… [Read more…]

Lucid HOWTO

June 17, 2010

I’ve finally had a chance to setup and test Lucid on my AAO zg5. I’m giving up on Crunchbang for the time being. I’m tired of hand editing menu entries and although the current alpha release has an XFCE4 version which has built-in automatic menu generation, it’s a little buggy. And when it comes down to… [Read more…]

I’ve been a bit slow about posting a lucid howto largely because we had a new baby a few weeks ago and I just haven’t had time to tinker.  I am probably going to migrate to Linux Mint LXDE though.  While I like openbox by itself, having to manually configure the menu is a pain.… [Read more…]

Arch linux HOWTO

[10-29-2011: These instructions are definitely out-of-date as a number of packages have changed.] [8-28-2011: These instructions may be severely out of date since Arch has released a new install image.] I received my new 1.8″ zif hard drive and as promised, I decided to try out Arch. I started with a base Arch system (including… [Read more…]

The Aspire One ZG5 SSD

December 21, 2009

I’ve finally gotten fed up with the AAO’s stock SSD. It is definitely the bottleneck — any time there is a lag in performance, the drive light will be on. So a few days ago, I looked on ebay and found the same 1.8″ Samsung zif hard drive that tnkgrl used to upgrade her drive.… [Read more…]

Karmic and wireless

December 6, 2009

I’ve had intermittent internet issues since upgrading to Karmic (short periods of what appears to be partial disassociation from the AP). From what I can see, it does not appear that many people with ZG5′s have this issue but what I can say for certain is that my wireless worked flawlessly under Jaunty. With the… [Read more…]
