I’m extremely disappointed with Oneiric Ocelot (the worst Canonical have put out since, and maybe even worse than, Krappy Koala). The sound indicator is now broken (the scroll wheel no longer works to change the volume) and something is very broken about the 64 bit version (ia32-libs is only installable with a fresh install and only with apt-get). I’ve thought about going back to Arch but I just don’t have the patience for tweaking. So back to Natty Narwal for me.

The One

Another one from The One: the single most astonishing thing really is that Oneiric just works. No unneeded bells, nor whistles, it just does what it is supposed to do; promptly, quickly and in a very good-looking way. But hey, it is just me and my Finnish-localised version of Oneiric and Aspire One. And my 10-y-o daughter. We are very pleased.
The One

You forget one very important fact here: everything runs right out of the box. My Aspire One ZG5 is perfect. Sleep? Waking up is a trivial task. Sound, display, WiFi, – everything just works. Real usage? Well, it’s my 10-yar-old daughter who is the main user of the One, and she is happy. She has been using Windows since she was three, and Ubuntu since she was eight, and if she is happy so am I. To be fair, I must confess I personally hate the default Oneiric desk but what can I do… well, maybe as a silent form of rebel I’ll stick to Maverick
And another confession: not right out of the box – I stumbled to some netbook and SSD tuning instructions and applied them right away. They were like “move your logs to ramdisk”.
And he even liked the interface, but he has always been a little bit to the weird side anyway..,
A few hours ago I showed the One to a friend of mine, who has been using the One for maybe two more years than I have, and he was impressed. He will also install Oneiric when he sobers up
To the previous poster: what do you mean by “scroll wheel” in this context? I have no scroll wheels? All the sound controls and indicators work perfectly except the beforementioned “wheel”, which I have not ever met. Now, after having written this reply to your comment, I came to thing about the volume indicator thingie which appears when you tune up or down the volume. Do you mean that one? It is sluggish sometimes but it is by no means a show-stopper to me.
